Description

Charles G. Finney, a practicing attorney before his conversion to Christ and entrance into the ministry of revival and evangelism, was particularly well equipped to preach a message on “The Guilt of Sin.” The reader, in fancy, will find himself in the courtroom listening to a well-argued presentation of what constitutes sin – and God’s remedy for this universal malady of mankind. From this point, Finney goes on to describe a certain type of sinner, the one who “being often reproved, hardeneth his neck…” He points out the ultimate doom of this man who consistently and continuously turns his back upon the claims of Christ. The descriptive passages in this chapter will strike home to the reader’s heart, whether he be sinner or saint. In another equally incisive chapter, Finney dramatically portrays “When a Soul Is Lost.” No one will be able to read this message and continue to take a lackadaisical attitude toward the seriousness of sin and its ultimate penalty. A companion chapter, “God’s Anger,” is equally graphic and gripping in its Biblical exposition of what it means to fall into the hands of an angry God, to go into eternity with sin unforgiven. The closing chapter of this powerful series clarifies the point “When Sin Is Fatal.” Finney makes no compromise with the so-called “little sin” theory, but points out that any sin, no matter how minor, when peristed in, is fatal to the welfare of the soul. He even goes so far as to claim that anyone in whom any sin has dominion casts serious doubt upon the validity of his coversion. Habitual sin, says Finney, has no place in the life of the Christian. On this uncompromising note, this series of sermons ends, offering no comfort wihtout a turning of the “back” upon the sin that so easily besets us … a note much needed in this modern day which so often soft-pedals and overlooks the little “foxes” of sin.
