When the album was compiled by the producers, they knew what they were doing. While several of the most famous Holly songs are missing in action here (“Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day”), the album is a fairly savvy snapshot of Holly’s stylistic range. Here, you get everything from flat-out rockabilly (the under-familiar “Blue Days, Black Nights”) and white boy R&B (“Early in the Morning”), to pure pop with guitars (the title song and “I’m Gonna Love You Too”), to the orchestral pop (“It Don’t Matter Anymore”) that he was experimenting with just before he died.
