Angelo Rancalli, son of a tenant farmer near Bergamo, Italy, grew up to become Pope John XXIII, possibly the best-loved Pope of all time. And Giacomo Manzu, son of a Bergamo shoemaker and church sexton, grew up to become one of the greatest sculptors of our time, whose political sympathies earned him the Lenin Peace Prize.
