Description

This short novel’s heroine is Catherine Sloper, the plain and quiet daughter of a prominent physician. Her beautiful and charming mother died when Catherine was an infant, and comparing his daughter to his wife, Dr. Austin Sloper finds the former lacking. Yet he still fiercely looks out for Catherine when she becomes involved with Travis Townsend, whom he regards as a scheming fortune hunter. Sloper threatens to disinherit his daughter when she insists on marrying Townsend, but Catherine defies him for the man she loves. Yet this first attempt to assert her independence sets in motion a series of consequences that utterly transforms Catherine and the world she has known.
